7th Women in Provincial and Local Government summit zooms in on development and gender equality

Pretoria, 13 August 2009 - The emancipation, empowerment and the creation of platforms for women to share experiences about gender equity and women advancement in general, is central to the programme for the Seventh Women in Provincial and Local Government Summit taking place from August 16th to the 18th in Bloemfontein.

Organised by the national Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) in partnership with the Free State province this year’s summit will formalize a process of attaching actions that will sustain summit resolutions from one event to the next.

This year’s summit is expected to take the women’s development agenda into a higher gear.

The summit is further intended to set the tone for the formalization of a proper structure that will advance and advocate issues that women identify during the summit discussions. Minister Sicelo Shiceka will deliver the keynote address on Sunday.

“This transpired after a women development gap has been identified between summit events. There has been a strong concern that previous summits have provided a once-off platform for women to network and share experiences but with no mechanism to sustain the efforts,” says DCGTA acting deputy director-general for capacity building, Dr Simphiwe Mngadi.

“Our intention is to make sure that women from all walks of life are aware of

platforms such as these and find ways of contributing and participating in

them,” says Dr Mngadi.

The theme for this year’s summit is: "Together Empowering Women for Development and Gender Equality."
