Pretoria, 17 August 2010 - In the early hours of the morning today, members of the South African Police Service’s Organised Crime Unit swooped on the homes of the suspended Municipal Manager of Madibeng in the North West, Mr Philemon Mapulane, and a man alleged to have illegally benefited from tenders in the municipality. An extensive audit conducted on capital expenditure projects in the Municipality has revealed financial mismanagement of project funds in excess of R100 million. Included in this audit were Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) and the Department of Water Affairs DWAF) projects. At least two companies who were service providers to the municipality are alleged to have paid bribes in excess of R1-million to the suspended municipal manager. Irregular tender awards amounting to more than R40 million are still being investigated.
