APPLYING TYPES
TO INDIVIDUAL MUNICIPALITIES

All three spheres of government play a role in establishing the new local government system, and in municipal types (see Establishing new municipalities).

National government has defined the types of municipality which may be established for each category of municipality. Provincial government plays a central role in introducing the new system of municipal types, when it establishes the new municipalities. Local government will be consulted before the MEC for local government determines which municipal type will apply to each municipality.

After the new systems of types has been introduced (after local government elections in 2000-01), the MEC for local government may change the type of a municipality at any time, by amending the section 12 notice (see Establishing new municipalities). If the MEC wants to change the type of a municipality, he or she must again consult with affected municipalities and organised local government in that province.
