GALESHEWE UNLEASHES 20 MOST SUCCESSFUL URBAN RENEWAL PROJECTS

In advancing its objective of creating sustainable development, the Galeshewe Urban Renewal Programme (GURP) hosted an Investment Imbizo on 15 April 2009 at the Mayibuye Multi-Purpose Centre. In 2008, GURP was awarded with the Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant (NDPG) and have since spent time conducting research to identify 20 projects that will have an impetus on its key strategic themes which centre on community development, economic development and tourism opportunities and also the creation of a conducive environment.

The Investment Imbizo was conducted to showcase all the 20 projects to Prospective Investors, Private Sector and the Community since significant progress has been made in all the projects.  It further provided for a networking opportunity between Government, Development Agencies, Local Community Representatives and the Media to engage and learn more about successes of the Urban Renewal Programme and how it can serve as a model for other areas.

Close to R60 million has been spent on GURP projects and the programme will see a further ±R400 million being invested over the next six years in public facilities alone such as the Science Centre, Retails Shopping Centre etc.

The outcome of the Investment Imbizo saw a concrete suggestion being made that the Galeshewe Business Development Forum should be formed in order for all sectors to be fully informed and involved about developments in the area.

What is the URP

In 2001, the URP and ISRDP were announced as a 10 year initiative to address poverty and underdevelopment in targeted areas, with a special emphasis on improving joint government planning and implementation. The URP focuses on 8 urban townships (called urban nodes), but the learning  from these 8 nodes are intended to improve the manner in which government support township renewal across the country. At the end of the programme, the intention is for township renewal support to become mainstreamed into the work of all of government and for government polices and programmes to reflect more effective support for urban poverty areas such as townships.
